I had a friend from Australia come and visit me recently.
It had been more than 15 years since we last met.
He actually came to Japan on business but had a day or 2 spare so came to visit us on the weekend.
It was great catching up.
I took him to Mt. Fuji in the morning but unfortunately the weather wasn't very good. All we could see were
clouds.
Afterwards, we went to Jouren Waterfall. This place is also famous for the huge Wasabi plantation growing in the river
below.
After talking to one of the staff there I found out that Wasabi only grows in cold flowing water and takes 2 to 3 years
to grow. I was amazed to hear it took this long!
I also tried Wasabi Ice cream for the first time. It was surprisingly good! Sweet but still had the Wasabi kick at the
end.
In the same river the Wasabi is growing, a little further down you can fish for Ayu(I think it's a type of Trout). There
are rods and bait available to rent for around 2000 yen.
Due to the weather Mt. Fuji was a little disappointing but overall we had an enjoyable day exploring some of the
local sights around here. Though, I did wake up the next day with sore legs from the hike up and down the stairs to the waterfall.
東京に仕事で来たオーストラリアの友達が15年ぶりに静岡まで足を延ばして会いに来てくれました。
初めての日本だということで、せっかくだからと富士山の5合目に一緒に行ってきましたが、空が曇っていて肝心の富士山が何も見えず・・・残念でした。
そのあとには、伊豆天城の浄蓮の滝を見に行ってきました。
大きな滝も見ものですが、浄蓮の滝では川の中でわさびを育てる、ちょっとしたワサビ田も見れます。
そこでわさびを作っている人に直接聞いたら、わさびは２年で成熟するそうです。意外と長くてびっくりしました。
わさびは綺麗な冷たい水の中にしか育たないので、ここの水は、一年を通して、とても澄んだ冷たいです。
小腹が減ったので、ワサビソフトクリームを初めて食べてみました。
辛いわけでなく、鼻にぬけるさわやかな甘みがある味でおいしいかったです。
他にも、竿や餌を貸し出している、あゆ釣りがあります。以前１ｈコース(2,000円程度)でやったことがありますが、持ち帰り上限いっぱいの６匹釣れました。
釣りをする人(+付き添い1人までOK)しか川辺に降りられないので、綺麗な冷たい水に触って見たいなら釣りするしかないです(笑)
富士山は残念でしたが、浄蓮の滝は友達もとても気に入ってくれました。
よかったです。
久々に会った友達でしたが、楽しく過ごせて嬉しかったです。
ちなみに、次の日階段の上り下りで筋肉痛になりました(笑)。
